The Mathematics Department believes that technology is an important tool that enhances student learning.  A TI-84 Plus graphing calculator is required in all courses, beginning with Algebra I.  These calculators are allowed for the ACT, SAT and Advanced Placement exams and are allowed at many universities.  The following models are all acceptable:

• TI-84 Plus
• TI-84 Plus Silver Edition
• TI-84 Plus CE
• TI-84 Plus CE Python

If you are purchasing a new calculator for the upcoming school year, please save the part of the packaging that is described below under "TI Technology Points."

Because of its ability to receive software updates via the internet through the use of a provided USB cable, the calculator you purchase should last throughout your student's high school career, provided they take good care of it.  When and how the calculator is used in class is at the discretion of the teacher.  While the calculator is an invaluable tool for studying mathematics, there may be times when a particular topic is more appropriately investigated and/or assessed without the use of a calculator.

Students are expected to demonstrate the utmost personal integrity when using their calculator. Inappropriate uses of the calculator include, but are not limited to:

• Playing games on the calculator during class
• Storing formulas, notes, programs and/or answers unauthorized by the teacher  
• Sharing a calculator during an assessment
• Using the calculator on an assessment not intended for calculator use

Inappropriate use may result in disciplinary consequences.  Teachers reserve the right to take steps to avoid inappropriate use by clearing the memory of the calculator, trading a personal calculator for a school calculator or other measures as necessary.

TI Technology Points

When you purchase a Texas Instruments calculator, we kindly request that you locate on the packaging and clip the “TI Technology Points” associated with their Rewards Program (see image at the right).  Your child can turn these labels in to his/her math teacher in the fall. Our department can redeem large quantities of these points for new classroom technology. Thank you in advance!

Registering your calculator in our database will allow us to determine the rightful owner in the event that your device is lost or stolen.  Engraving your name in the back of your calculator is a good first step, but it does not provide the same level of protection from theft as registering your device in our database.  

Calculator Registration

The VHHS Math Department has a limited number of TI-84 calculators to loan to students in need.  To request a calculator, please follow these steps:

1. The student should complete the Google form linked below (parents do not have access to this form).  The form asks the student to enter a parent's email address.
2. The parent will receive an email from Steven Korney (VHHS Math Department Chair) asking them to approve the calculator loan request.
3. The teacher will issue the student a calculator once the parent approves the request.

Students who do not return the school-issued calculator at the end of the school year are subject to a replacement fee of $100.
