All Students Entering Grades 9-12 in 2013-14 *New*

All Students Entering Grades 9-12 in 2013-14 *New*

Due to an increase in the number of cases of pertussis (Whooping Cough) in Illinois, there is a new immunization requirement.  All students entering sixth through 12th grades in the 2013-14 school year will need the Tdap vaccine before the first day of school in August.  Tdap is one of four combination vaccines used to prevent tetanus, diptheria and pertussis (Whooping Cough).  The other three combination vaccines are DTaP, DT and Td.  Students who have not already recieved Tdap are required to receive one Tdap dose regardless of when they received the DTaP, DT or Td dose.  Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to determine if your student's Tdap vaccination is up to date.  They VHHS nurses will need your completed vaccine record.

District 128 Announces Launch of Mobile Application: D128 Mobile

Community High School District 128 is pleased to announce the launch of its mobile application, D128 Mobile. As of Dec. 10, 2012, users of iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod) can download the free app from the Apple App Store. The Android version for Google smart phones and tablets is available on Google Play. Users of all other smart phones may access the app on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at m.d128.org.

"We are excited to be among the first high school districts in the area to develop a mobile app," said District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea. District 128 administrators began discussing the creation of an app in Spring 2012, and began work with Blackboard Mobile last summer. Blackboard Mobile, a division of Blackboard Inc., is dedicated to providing innovative mobile solutions to institutions around the world. As the global leader in campus life app development, Blackboard Mobile has partnered with hundreds of institutions to enrich teaching, learning, and life outside the classroom.

"Our students and parents are increasingly more mobile," explained District 128 Communications Director Mary Todoric. "They are no longer tied to a computer for their information needs, and we are now able to put the information they need in the palm of their hand 24-7."

The components of D128 Mobile are:

Directory: Quickly look up a teacher, call his voice mail extension or send him an email, and save his contact information to your personal contacts.

School icons: Parents and students can get updated news, videos and find events for sports, plays, concerts, and even find out what on the lunch menu for the week.

Important #s: Need to call in an absence, speak to someone in the athletic office or main office? This icon will give you the numbers to call.

Social: If you're one of the millions who check Facebook and Twitter accounts several times throughout the day, this icon will takes you directly to your favorite social sites and any up-to-the-minute news and photos coming from both high schools.

Events: Look up and add important school dates, sporting events, concerts and other student activities directly to your personal calendar.

PS Portal: Students and parents can check on their daily assignments and grades as soon as teachers have published them.

Images: Enjoy photos from the latest events at LHS and VHHS.

Videos: Stream videos from LHS and VHHS events right to your phone.

Links: Access mobile pages to some great District 128 resources.

District 128 Director of Information Technology Mick Torres noted, "District 128 believes that important school communications should be dynamic and digital. We further recognize that small, portable technologies such as laptops, smart phones and tablet PCs (iPads) are quickly emerging as the technology by which our stakeholders prefer to receive and interact with their information."

As with any mobile application, D128 Mobile will continue to evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of its users. Updates will be available for download via the app stores.

"We look forward to receiving feedback from our parents, students and staff," noted Todoric. "We want our app to be THE resource for our staff and families, and look forward to many exciting additions to it in the future."

LHS AND VHHS STUDENTS SET NEW DISTRICT 128 RECORDS ON ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS

Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools are known for their high academic standards and high achieving students. The results of the 2011-12 Advanced Placement (AP) exams are in, and are giving District 128 even more good news of which to be proud.  Last spring, the District had its highest number of students in history take AP exams. Those 924 test takers also took the highest number of exams in district history. And, of those 1,948 AP exams, a district record 90.8% earned grades of 3, 4 or 5.

Increasing high performance on the AP exams is a trend in District 128. In the last five years, the number of students taking AP exams at LHS and VHHS has increased 36.9%, the number of AP exams taken has increased 26.6%, and the percentage of students scoring 3 or higher has risen to the current historically high level of 90.8%.

The District continues to increase access to rigorous Advanced Placement college curricula while increasing student success on AP exams. This has been a critical part of the District 128 strategic and school improvement planning efforts.  Last year the District was one of only 367 U.S. public school districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses for a broader number of students and also maintained or improved the rate at which their AP students earned scores of 3 or higher on an AP exam.

“Our district-record Advanced Placement results are very exciting,” said District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea. “We are extremely proud of the outstanding efforts of our students, teachers and administrators in the AP arena.”  Lea also noted that the continued growth in the numbers of District 128 students taking AP classes and earning scores of 3 or higher is a testament to the District’s commitment to provide additional opportunities for all students to benefit from rigorous AP curricula, high-quality teaching and the supports necessary for success.

"Check out" Ebooks & Audiobooks in the LMC

Now all District 128 students and staff can download an ebook or audiobook on to your mobile device. Start from the Community High School District 128 Digital Library, or search for a book in the library catalog. Download a free app to bring the ebook or audiobook over to your NOOK, Kindle, smartphone, iPod, MP3 player or tablet. Patrons can check out up to 3 titles each for 3 weeks. The library card number for students is your student ID number; staff use their network username. At the end of the lending period, the books are automatically returned, so you'll never have overdue fines.
We have just added ebook versions of some of the books that are required reading at LHS and VHHS. These unlimited-user ebooks can be downloaded and used by all students, all the time! If you have questions about the Digital Library, please contact the Library Media Center at either high school. We hope you enjoy reading and listening in these new and convenient formats.
